Graduation Poem: Collaborative Exercise (Prose Poem)

AGENDA:

Here is an outline/exercise for all of you to contribute to a prose poem for graduation. We'll call this "Notes Towards a Graduation Poem."

What do you need to do?  Select a prompt from the list below and write a paragraph of "advice" or "wishes" for your fellow students or yourself.  Post your paragraph in the comments section of this blog post.

We will re-arrange the paragraphs into something that makes sense and can be effectively read
by those of you who want to read at graduation.

This is just an idea to get. a collaborative prose poem started.   Feel free to "play"with it by completing the sentences  and adding your thoughts.

HERE ARE THE PROMPTS:

In the future, you will...

Do not be afraid to...

Explore...

Remember...

Challenge yourself to...

Travel to...

Look at the world as...

Listen to...

Pay close attention to...

etc.  Be imaginative and honest and creative and funny and serious and make the good!

  1. Listen to yourself and only yourself. Don’t let anyone discourage you or break you down. We are the future and you do matter. Listen to yourself because you are the only person you can trust.

  2. In the future you will not be afraid to grab life by its hands and run away with it.
There will often be a rock or an earth shattering moment that tries to steer you off course,
but adversaries are motivators. They push you to do better, work harder, and be your best self. When you were younger, at the simple sight of trouble you accepted defeat,
but as you grew older you quickly learned that life does not coddle you from your fears, anxieties, and problems—it throws them at you full force, without regard.
As you grew older, you learned that life and adulthood were about living each possible moment without the fear that everything will go wrong—because things will go wrong,
but in the future you will not be afraid to get up when you’re knocked down.
In the future, you’ll leap over that rock and just keep running.

  3. (This is going to be bad)

    Attempt 1.
Remember your grammar rules because God forbid Gamzon sees a colon next to your "by".

    Attempt 2.
Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone, but Craddock's going to force you to anyway. Sometimes, unfortunately, he's right. He won't let you forget it.

    Attempt 3.
Look at the world as a sea of grass hills,
ups and downs set up in cycles.
Sometimes it will feel like Sisyphus,
who can never get over the top.
    But it will not.

  5. (I apologize for the following sappy words)
Some people will tell you that your voice is not enough, they will put a price on your silence, try and stop you from living your truth. Do not be afraid to be ambiguous. Remember that this very moment is just as important as all those that came before it and all of the moments that will happen. Do not be afraid to explore who you are and all that you are capable of. Always remember to be authentic. One day you will find someone who will truly understand. One day you will be enough for yourself too. When that day comes, you will know that the struggle will have been worth it.

  6. Look at the world as we transition into an new atmosphere.New doors will open,People will part separate ways and meet new people. Memories will be remembered and new ones will be made. We will make life time memories with people from all over the world. Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone and explore in a new world. Don't forget where you came from, remember how vulnerable you are to achieving more in life.

  7. Do not be afraid to ask for help. It might be difficult to brave the world independently, but it's even more difficult to admit you cannot do it on your own. It’s not cheating to reach for an outstretched hand and it doesn’t make you any inferior to those who choose to make their way solitarily. The glory of success, whatever that may mean to each of us, is much more rewarding if someone else is there to share that experience.

  8. Remember the moments that make SOTA, SOTA. Remember Black Lives Matter Day and the last performance in Dance Concert. Remember the art shows that are open to anyone right when you walk in, and the paintings on the walls that line the hallways. The little things that make our school what it is should be cherished while you still have them. Even without a homecoming football game or separate junior and senior proms, school spirit never lacked. We will remember the moments that have made us proud to be Silverhawks, and it is your time now to make those moments worth remembering.

  9. Don’t be afraid to break through the walls you’ve built around yourself. Writing shows who you are and how you feel. Some people will judge you along the way but that shouldn’t make you fear what is to come, it should make you want to prove yourself more.

  10. (This sucks I dont care)
In these last days, explore the hallways. Memorize the dents in the lockers, stains on the tile, the wall's color. Trace the your daily path, the staircase you always take. Find the things you never knew were there, like the broken locker that always hangs half open or the single stain on white tile. Take it in and walk out the doors with a full mind and memories for the future.

  11. Travel to measures that go beyond your limitations. Although there will always be places that aren’t planned, there will be even more places that you never thought you’d love before. Go where your fears scare you and where your greatest happinesses make you feel whole, it’s all apart of the process in finding yourself.

  12. In the future you will be disappointed. People will be disappointed in you. There will be things you wish you did and too many that you wish you didn't. On your happiest day you will hear these words of disappointment from those you love most. On a
backdrop of blue they are written there, don't read them.

This world is an ocean. An ocean of goods and bads. Think of yourself as a fisherman, a one armed fisherman. A one armed fisherman who is only able to pick the good. Acknowledging the bad, though never willingly choosing but accepting its existence, sitting in content silence together.

  13. Watch carefully as your limbs expand beneath your skin, growing into your own body. We can only hope that those who could never handle the length of their legs will walk confidently, that beards will grow in evenly for the first time, that those who envied one another so relentlessly, will find a place where they are truly comfortable. As you go on, you’ll never hear the music in the hallways that you’ve walked down every day, you’ll never need to pull down a dress and hide from Ms Aspenleiter, and you’ll never eat your lunch in the shadow of a Campbell’s soup can, but those images will age with you, growing rosy and softening into your memories. Serving you in ways that you’d never expect as you move forward.

  14. Remember that you can always find comfort in friends, that the people around you love you and care for you. Remember that you're never really alone. When life gets hard, take a step back and ignore your problems for a second and see the beauty around you. Nothing is ever too pressing to allow yourself a break, and take care of yourself.
