  1. I agree with Raina's assertion that Lucille was eaten by a bear. Look no further than the line "Lucy had simply vanished."

If a bear ate her completely, there would be nothing left. And according to science, bears can and do eat clothing and bones.

  3. Yeah see, a bear makes sense. Some large wilderness animal snatched her. That or she ran away, maybe she wanted to stay in Canada and was over Chicago and wanted to live in the woods. I don't think you're supposed to know. Not knowing is what messed Lois up. When you know you can cope and move on but not knowing just leaves you wondering.

  4. Lucy was probably kidnapped. This makes sense somewhat because there was no trace of her and if she was eaten by an animal, there would’ve been remains of her. Lucy only screamed once, so someone could have covered her mouth and stopped her from screaming.

  5. I don't know. Maybe Lucy was eaten by some animal that left no trace of her behind. This is a hard question to answer. There's no textual support I can find because it wasn't said. Maybe there's some sort of deeper meaning to her disappearance. ) :

  6. Lucy was stolen by Aliens.. hear me out. It makes sense, no trace? Duh, what else. She screamed as she was being lifted up to their ship. -Emani

  7. There were many different ideas that I had, but I couldn't come to the conclusion because it seemed very mysterious. At first, I thought that Lucy was eaten by a bear, but then I thought about Lois coming back and finding the bear with blood or hearing the bear roar. Then, I thought about Lucy wanting to jump into the water and drowning. I thought that that wouldn't have worked because they would find the body later on. I love how Atwood doesn't reveal what happened with Lucy because it makes me reflect on it and analyze that section of the story more. I came to the conclusion that Lucy was kidnapped by her boyfriend. Lucy said that she was tired of life. Her boyfriend was a gardener and he probably knew about a lot about nature.
'"It would be nice not to go back."
    "To camp?" said Lois.
"To Chicago," said Lucy. "I hate it there."
    "What about your boyfriend?" said
Lois. Lucy didn't answer. She was
either asleep or pretending to be.' (Atwood 39).
This suggests that Lucy wanted to leave with her boyfriend and never go back home. Her boyfriend probably caught her by surprise and that is why she shouted. They ran away together. Lucy is not dead.
